About Garrigill There is a public telephone here. There is a grocery shop here. There is a post office here.
Garrigill is a pleasant village of stone flagged roofs grouped round a shady green in the valley of the South Tyne. It was a lead mining area. That industry, as you have seen earlier on the PW, declined by the start of the 20th century. Huge changes in the agricultural industry throughout the last 50 years has taken men off the land. Here in Garrigill the effects of these changes have been quantified: the population declined from 1540 in 1821 to as few as 200 in 1971. A quarter of the houses are holiday homes, so the population doubles in the summer. In the church porch you will find one of those all-too-rare notices specifically welcoming you as a Pennine walker and inviting you and your muddy boots/wet clothes to take shelter. If you do so, be sure to notice the marvellous silence in and around the church, broken only by bird song.
