Comments by walkers who stayed at Vane House in Osmotherley on The Cleveland Way
We stayed for 2 nights when walking the Cleveland Way in August 2013. We arrived early and very wet and had to wait quite a long time as a large party of cyclists arrived at the same time as the owner, Alan Abbott (who was returing from his day job as a driving instructor) and he insisted on taking people's breakfast orders before letting them go to their bedrooms. However, once we settled in we were well looked after by Alan, who kindly dried out our wet walking boots by the aga in the kitchen and advised us on where to eat. There is a choice of local restaurants; we particularly liked the Three Tuns.

Our room was quite small but clean and nicely decorated. The welcome was warm. Breakfast good.
It appeared to run like a well oiled machine. Just as well as it was very busy.

We had one of the new rooms at the back, which was more spacious and light than we had expected - worth requesting if possible. Everything was fine and organised in a business-like fashion. We found the early evening menu at the Three Tuns was reasonably priced and excellent -- some of the best food we had on the walk. The main menu is expensive though.

Very friendly and professionally run B&B. Rooms were small but ample for one nights accomodation. Ate at the Queen Catherine - which we later found out to be the worst of the 3 pubs - although perfectly adequate.

The rooms were clean and well furnished but somewhat less than 'spacious', you couldn't swing a mouse, let alone a cat, in ours. And the owner 'didn't do fried eggs'!!

Thank you Alan for a lovely welcome and a comfortable stay. Immaculate room, hearty breakfast.

There was no friendly welcome for us at Vane House. Despite booking in November 2004 for a June 2005 stay, on arrival here after a hard day's walking, we were advised that due to

More of an air of hotel than B&B. Every other B&B had Horlicks of Hot Chocolate sachets and biscuits with the kettle in the room but not here. Crummy little plastic pots of jam rather than a jar. The last peoples rubbish in the bin and 'body hair' in the soap are the kind of things that I can't imagine happening anywhere else we stayed.

Given the above, Vane House served it's purpose. Perhaps our room was bigger than some of the other reviews because it was the disabled room on the ground floor. The bed was fine as well.

All in all, functional but soulless

Very disappointed, rooms very small, Packed lunches supplied were overpriced (5 each) Mr Abbott refused to return deposit when one member of our party could not attend, despite being given 6 weeks notice and there was no one else staying. He also charges 5 extra for cleaning for a dog.

We liked Osmotherley and Vane House was very comfortable. Again though - only a shower, no bath!

A warm welcome at the end of a long haul from Chop Gate. Alan kindly booked us a table at the Golden Lion- lovely food. Osmotherley was worth the extra mile.

We really liked Osmotherley. Our room at Vane House was very nice except for the terrible bed--soft and slanted. But Allan was a good host and directed us to the Golden Lion for dinner, which was excellent, if expensive. Be sure to visit Mount Grace Priory on the way--absolutely fascinating.

We were rather disappointed with Vane House. I think we were given the smallest room, which should have been a single, and the beds were uncomfortable, coupled with the fact that we paid much more here than anywhere else along the journey.

First of all Osmotherley is definitely suprerior to Ingleby Arncliffe in every single respect. No question whatsoever. Walk the extra miles or take the shortcut if you can negotiate the overgrown footpath (we ended up crawling through bracken onto the adjacent field).

Secondly this accomodation is quite pleasant. The building appears to be recently modernised, is very clean and pleasant. Finally evening meals in well provide for in the green and pleasant village, and even the public loos are worth a visit! Yes, we shall return to Osmotherley.
